Mattel Madame du Barbie Tenth in a Series of Limited Edition by Bob Mackie 17934. Madame du Barbie: named after Madame du Barry, the mistress of King Louis XV of France who was executed at the guillotine just five weeks after Marie Antionette, this Bob Mackie is a stunning addition to the existing Mackie line. Just as "over the top" as his previous creations, this doll is in the same shade of ice blue as "Billions of Dreams" Barbie. Her 18 century gown is embellished with sequins and crystal beads, and Barbie's platinum hair is cleverly styled to resemble a powdered wig from that period. I recently watched an interview of Bob Mackie by Robert Best of Mattel.
Bob was asked to compare the experience of designing for live famous people versus designing for Barbie. His answer was there was not much difference except Barbie was easier to get in for a fitting! That answer made me smile.. Mackie once remarked: "There hasn't been a woman in the limelight since Garbo or Dietrich who could pull off such outrageous visual fantasies while maintaining her individual beauty". Although he was speaking about Cher, I think Barbie would fall into this category as well.
